Jesus said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6 (NIV)

This means if you don't know Jesus, then you will never know God.  If you never know God, then you will always be separated from Him.

The Southern Baptist Convention has a nice website with a really solid explanation of what it means to know Jesus.
